We’ve put together some helpful tips that may help you or your loved ones who are experiencing swallowing difficulties:
Positioning
- Sit upright at a 90-degree angle.
- Tilt your head slightly forward.
- Remain sitting upright or standing for 15 to 20 minutes after eating a meal.
Dining environment
- Minimize background distractions in the area where you eat if possible e.g. turn the television off.
- Stay focused on the tasks of eating and drinking.
- Do not talk with food in your mouth.
- Make sure the dining environment is well lit
- Clear the dining area as much as possible e.g. do not have papers or excess objects on the dining table which could become a distraction.
Amount and rate
- Eat slowly. Putting down utensils in between bites can encourage a slower pace of eating.
- Cut food into small pieces and chew it thoroughly.
- Do not overfill your mouth. Ensure your mouth is clear before taking another mouthful.
