Dysphagia Tips

We’ve put together some helpful tips that may help you or your loved ones who are experiencing swallowing difficulties:

Positioning

  • Sit upright at a 90-degree angle.
  • Tilt your head slightly forward.
  • Remain sitting upright or standing for 15 to 20 minutes after eating a meal.

Dining environment

  • Minimize background distractions in the area where you eat if possible e.g. turn the television off.
  • Stay focused on the tasks of eating and drinking.
  • Do not talk with food in your mouth.
  • Make sure the dining environment is well lit
  • Clear the dining area as much as possible e.g. do not have papers or excess objects on the dining table which could become a distraction.

Amount and rate

  • Eat slowly. Putting down utensils in between bites can encourage a slower pace of eating.
  • Cut food into small pieces and chew it thoroughly.
  • Do not overfill your mouth. Ensure your mouth is clear before taking another mouthful.
