What is head and neck cancer?

Head and neck cancer is a general term to describe different cancers in this area. These cancers start in the tissues in the head and neck area, such as the mouth (tongue, gums, palate, lips), throat, nose, salivary glands and the middle ear.

Treatments for these cancers may include surgery to remove structures essential for functions (e.g. voice box – a laryngectomy), radiotherapy, chemoradiotherapy or a combination of treatments.

These commonly affect a person’s ability to speak, use their voice, swallow, smell and breathe, significantly affecting quality of life. Left unsupported, these difficulties can also affect a person’s ability to participate in social activities and to return to work.

Symptoms to look out for are:

  • A prolonged suffering of mouth ulcers.
  • Pain during swallowing or chewing.
  • Difficulty breathing or talking.
  • Sore throat or earache affecting one side.
  • Swelling in the mouth or neck.

If you or a loved one are suffering from any of these symptoms, please contact your GP.
