Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological condition which effects the central nervous system (CNS). This includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

The exact cause is still unknown, but involves an individuals immune system attacking the CNS. The resulting damage to myelin, the protective layer insulating wire-like nerve fibers, disrupts signals to and from the brain.

There are many symptoms of MS and these can include the following:

  • fatigue
  • vision problems
  • numbness and tingling
  • muscle spasms, stiffness and weakness
  • mobility problems
  • pain
  • problems with thinking, learning and planning
  • depression and anxiety
  • sexual problems
  • bladder problems
  • bowel problems
  • speech and swallowing difficulties

Most people with MS will only have a few of these symptoms.

Speech and swallowing difficulties

Some people with MS experience difficulty chewing or swallowing (dysphagia) at some point.

Speech may also become slurred, or difficult to understand (dysarthria).

Keep an eye out for our upcoming blogs regarding swallowing and speech difficulties caused by MS.
